Those who had lived during the Second World War 2 or had read about it would know how the Germans forced all children to go to schools hurriedly established to train and brainwash them so that the country could have a new wave of literate and obedient soldiers and workers for the numerous factories too that were being established.

This success of this mission was such that many allied countries too including the US adopted it in their countries. To this day, their exist rudiments of those policies that were adopted by the rulers of those times. In peacetime, children resent and rebel against any attempts to suppress giving free expression to their thoughts and creativity.

Added to that is the chaos caused in most big schools with too few teachers to control a larger volume of students resulting in a serious breakdown of discipline. All this in addition to certain other policies adopted in these schools have resulted in the students being subjected to much frustration through their inability to acquire the knowledge they desire as individuals in their respective spheres.

People are shocked at statistics that reveal a illiteracy level of 25% in the most developed country in the world! On what can we blame this state of affairs except the system of education dished out in the US for around the last quarter century?

A mother unqualified in teaching can make a child to read and write at home in just six weeks, which is apparently not achieved in several instances within a school environment even after three years! So, it is not surprising the tide is rapidly changing for a shift away from the traditional schooling methods. Where both parents are working and restrained in homeschooling their children for other reasons turn to alternative schools as the only option.

ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is now on the increase especially in very bright and creative children, due to boredom setting in as a result of a lack of opportunities to perform to their true potential. They do not understand what is happening to them except that they are getting bored with the snail pace of proceeding from one section to the next.

Unable to bear the boredom, they become restless, angry and disruptive. Sometimes, teachers may add insult to injury by pulling them up for their seemingly “unruly” behavior. Such children sometimes get sick, refuse to go to school and beg to be allowed to hang on at home. Parents who fail to understand the root cause of their child’s strange behavior from recent times somehow pack him off to school aggravating their child’s problem still more.

However, due to much publicity given to ADHD in recent times, parents have now become wiser. They find more reasons being added at frequent intervals to pull their children out of public schools and find alternative options.

Another point that highlights the fast deteriorating standards of our education in public schools is the lowering of the standard for Scholastic Aptitude Test. What is the reason for the earlier standards to suddenly become “too difficult” for the present day children? It is the fault of the system and not the child.

A similar case at hand is the lamentations expressed by many parents and grandparents that their children/grandchildren have an inferior IQ to theirs! All this go to show that the system does not encourage creativity, curiosity and a thirst for knowledge beyond the boundaries of an apparently poorly set curriculum of studies.

The escalation of extreme cases of violence that is taking place in schools is another discouraging factor for parents to risk sending their children to schools outside. It is a question of life and death or being maimed for the rest of their lives. Increasingly sadistic and frequent occurrences of bullying and utter chaos and indiscipline prevailing in school buses is another matter for grave concern of all parents.

Taking all this into consideration, it is not at all surprising that homeschooling is now gaining in popularity.
