There are several sources from which you could obtain different course contents including the internet which in itself is a vast source comprising of several websites offering different versions of their own at varying prices, including some websites that offer comprehensive courses absolutely free of charge. We give below a few points for those who wish to know how to discern between the myriad of websites offering home schooling courses to find the most appropriate for your child.

How is the source of origin of the courses, and the extent of its reliability? Would you be buying a course of poor quality at a high cost? Is a free course indicative of poor quality? It is not necessarily so, but there is a possibility they may try to pester you to buy some of their other courses by giving one free.

Is the course you are now looking at the one you really wanted or does it contain certain sections that you consider are not required? Are they providing enough information under different sections to determine what exactly you are buying?

Do they provide an easy “contact us” link to communicate effectively on any questions and problems that arise from time to time? Is their FAQ well framed and easily accessible?

How user-friendly is the website?

Is your child capable of interacting effectively with a computer?

Is the course for viewing on screen only, or is it capable of being downloaded and printed?

Is the likely time to be spent using the computer too long as to adversely affect the eyesight of your child or to cause a headache?

Do you have a broadband, ADSL or ISDN connection for fast internet access, or would your downloads take hours to finish?

Today’s children prefer to work in a computer environment and they are much attracted by colorful websites that are both user friendly and fun. However, if you access internet only through a dial-up networking connection, you will have to miss out on telephone calls while the computer is engaged on the internet.

There are some people who say that internet courses lack the depth compared to the depth in the content obtainable from offline courses. But to me it looks as if that statement lacks depth!; because internet content is generally periodically updated and even if there are any shortcomings in the content, that too can be remedied in the least possible time if the publisher so wishes to; whereas to put out a new version incorporating updates etc in the case of printed publications would be a very costly and cumbersome exercise.
