Creating a Schedule for your Home School
You may do home schooling for your child by all means; but have a scheduled program like in a normal school applied at home too. Maintain discipline consistently and impress upon your children to treat you more as their teacher than the mother during study hours. If you relax all rules during study hours to please their childish wishes now, remember that you are only doing them harm and a big disfavor in the long run.
Schedule the study hours in such a way so that studies could be over within the morning session itself, leaving the rest of the day for their other activities for physical well being, development of sports skills and engaging in other arts like music, drawing/painting/speech and drama etc., while also pursuing other interests like reading, watching TV and playing with children in the neighborhood.
The best way to instill discipline is not through rigid and tough measures, but with a mixture of loving kindness, persuasion, understanding, flexibility; whikle not hesitating to be firm too where the former tactics fail to achieve the desired results.
Your child’s study time at home could end in double quick time compared to those of traditional school going children, due to the time involved in travelling, attending assembly, waiting time in the canteen to buy refreshments, and the teachers taking more time over the weaker students to help them come up; which are all cut out in a home schooling scenario. The biggest issue in home schooling revolves around your ability to find the time to devote to your children’s uninterrupted learning in the morning. You may be having enough chores like cooking, cleaning, washing up that cannot be postponed or neglected while it is equally true that you cannot have your children idling and waiting until you finish your chores either. A good solution to this problem is to get your children also involved in the household chores, which would give a three way benefit by easing your workload, making them enjoy themselves while helping you to make things they especially like such as favorite pies or puddings; and last but not least, by serving as a part of their education and training in molding them to be well balanced and practical minded adults.
If the children are too small to help you other than to make things worse for you, assign them some interesting exercises that they would do with a smile and are not likely to send them to sleep; so that they could be engaged in some productive work while you finish one phase of your chores. These exercises could vary from painting, cutting and pasting scrap books to doing work by listening to a CD or collecting information from encyclopedias for a project, depending on their respective ages. Further, you could link these exercises to a points scheme with weekly prizes for those who score over a certain level. On days that you feel drained of any innovative ideas to assign them interesting exercises, you may wake up one or two hours early and be done with all or part of your chores by the home school starting time. If you manage to finish only part of your chores by that time, you can have another work session later after fulfilling your teacher role continuously for around three hours from starting time.
How well you can organize your home school depends to a great extent on the ages of your children, and how well brought-up or how spoilt they are. Don’t make your home school too monotonous by sticking to the same procedures day after day. You could try out different procedures at random intervals; but find out which works best for you and try to stick to that method for most of the days, though not everyday.
