Find Out the Learning Style of Your Child
Every child does not learn the same way; and each child could have a certain style, time and a mode in which he or she learns best. If you intend to put your child through a program of home schooling, then it is important that you find the learning style of your child in advance, so that you could optimize the extent of learning that your child effectively receives.
Experts have identified three categories into which all children could be divided depending on which method goes best for a particular child. The three main styles of learning are known as Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.
Visual:
Children in this category learn best from what they see. They are the children who learn well by reading books or pouring over printed matter of text or images. They generally like creative arts like drawing, painting and also crafts. They could also become good TV addicts if not restricted by parents. The existing system of general education too favors this type of students.
Auditory:
They are the type who appear to be inattentive in class and yet surprise their teachers by obtaining good marks at examinations! This is because their perception is primarily auditory and they remember better what they hear even if they are looking elsewhere when the teacher is explaining. They prefer to be attending lectures than taking study leave to be pouring over reference books and study notes. They do very well in higher studies at universities though they may not shine in school as much as the “visual” category of students. They are great at learning languages by listening to cassettes and audio CDs. They will also know many songs by-heart.
Kinesthetic:
These children are very practical minded. They are the inquisitive and the impatient types who like to find out how to do something or how something happens by experimentation rather than following user manuals. They will not have the patience for reading manuals or to be listening to instructions in the first place. Some of them are very bright; but by being forced to follow the traditional teaching methods in our schools that are geared for uplifting and rewarding mainly the “studious” types of students, these innovative “hands on” type of students often miss the bus, and it is very unfortunate because we may be losing quite a few possible inventors this way.
If there was a system to identify the hidden talents of kinesthetic students and guide them in different directions appropriate to their talents, they could have ended up far differently than how they end up presently; as mechanics, butchers, carpenters etc. due to our existing system of education.
Observe your child carefully to determine to what category he or she falls, so as to impart the lessons and provide necessary training to the child appropriately. Some may show an equal aptitude for say visual and auditory types of learning, but further observations will reveal which is the more dominant of the two in your child. It is not necessarily only boys who are kinesthetic; but there are many girls too. The under mentioned website is useful for testing the style of learning of a child:
